USA The Living Tradition
A workshop with Thomas Heywood on how to maintain the cultural, educational and musical value of the Concert Organ Tradition in the 21st century.
Commencing with the origins and history of the Concert Organ Tradition, this workshop will guide the participants through the previous "Golden Age" of the Concert Organ, discussing the instruments, performers, programmes and audiences from the mid-19th century to the 1930s.
The mid-20th century influence of the neo-classical revival on secular organ performance, programming and audiences will be discussed, as will the re-invigoration of the Concert Organ Tradition in the 21st Century.
The workshop will conclude with a look to the future:
How can the Concert Organ tradition reach out so effectively to children?
How does approachable repertoire draw children to the pipe organ?
How do concert organs reach out to the general public and youth in a unique way?
How do large concert organs act as a musical tool to inspire children?
